Rules

The maximum length allowed for a Eurovision song is three minutes.

There is no official rule about the nationality of the act a country sends - although some countries have their own requirements, any country can enter a song written and sung by anyone of any nationality.

No more than six people are allowed on stage for any performance - this includes backup singers and dancers.

Live animals are banned from featuring in performances.

A recent rule change is that performers must now be older than sixteen.

No entry is allowed to be a cover version of another song.

Interestingly, no samples of other songs are allowed - this probably explains the lack of decent hip-hop records in the competition’s history!

Between 1966 and 1972, and from 1978 to 1998, songs were only allowed to be performed in the entering country’s native language.

In 1958, a rule was introduced that invited the previous year’s winner to host the event - however quite a few countries have actually declined this invitation!

After 1969’s four-way tie, the rules were changed to allow both a sing-off and a show of hands from the judges to decide an overall winner if needed.
